What is Liquid Penetrant Testing?
Liquid Penetrant Testing (LPT), also known as Dye Penetrant Testing (DPT), is a widely used non-destructive testing method for detecting surface-breaking defects in non-porous materials. The process relies on capillary action to draw penetrant into surface discontinuities.
After allowing dwell time for penetration, excess penetrant is removed and a developer is applied. The developer draws penetrant back out of defects, creating visible indications that reveal the location, shape, and size of surface discontinuities.
- ✓ Works on all non-porous materials
- ✓ Detects very fine surface cracks
- ✓ Simple and economical method
- ✓ Portable and field-applicable
LPT Inspection Process
Surface Preparation
The test surface is thoroughly cleaned to remove contaminants, paint, and debris that could affect penetrant entry.
Penetrant Application
Liquid penetrant (visible or fluorescent) is applied to the surface and allowed to dwell for sufficient time.
Excess Removal
Excess penetrant is carefully removed from the surface while leaving penetrant in discontinuities.
Developer Application
Developer is applied to draw penetrant from defects, creating visible indications for evaluation.
Penetrant Testing Methods
We offer various penetrant systems to suit different inspection requirements
Fluorescent Penetrant
High-sensitivity inspection using fluorescent dyes viewed under UV-A light for detecting fine discontinuities.
Visible Dye Penetrant
Colored penetrant (typically red) viewed in normal white light conditions for general inspection applications.
Water Washable
Penetrants that can be removed with water, suitable for rough surface finishes and large area inspections.
Solvent Removable
High-sensitivity penetrants removed with solvent for precision components requiring clean surface finish.
