What is Visual Testing?
Visual Testing (VT) is the most basic and commonly used non-destructive testing method. It involves the direct visual examination of surfaces to detect obvious defects such as cracks, corrosion, misalignment, physical damage, and weld discontinuities.
While simple in concept, visual testing requires trained inspectors who understand what to look for and can accurately assess the significance of observed conditions. VT is often the first inspection method used and can identify issues before more expensive testing methods are employed.
- ✓ Immediate results with no equipment
- ✓ Cost-effective inspection method
- ✓ Applicable to all materials
- ✓ Foundation for quality control
Visual Testing Techniques
We employ various visual inspection techniques for comprehensive assessment
Direct Visual Inspection
Unaided eye examination or with simple magnification tools for accessible surface areas and components.
Remote Visual Inspection
Using borescopes, videoscopes, and cameras to inspect internal surfaces and confined spaces.
Photographic Documentation
High-resolution imaging for detailed records, comparison analysis, and documentation of findings.
Weld Profile Gauging
Using gauges and measuring tools to verify weld dimensions, profiles, and conformance to specifications.
What We Look For
Weld Discontinuities
- ✓ Cracks and crater cracks
- ✓ Undercut and overlap
- ✓ Porosity and surface pores
- ✓ Incomplete fusion
- ✓ Excessive reinforcement
- ✓ Spatter and arc strikes
Surface Conditions
- ✓ Corrosion and pitting
- ✓ Erosion damage
- ✓ Mechanical damage
- ✓ Coating defects
- ✓ Deformation and distortion
- ✓ Surface finish quality
Dimensional Checks
- ✓ Weld size and profile
- ✓ Alignment and fit-up
- ✓ Joint preparation
- ✓ Component dimensions
- ✓ Gap measurements
- ✓ Angular misalignment
